The energy transition needs leeway – we are creating it

By using Dynamic Line Rating (DLR), existing power lines can be utilized more efficiently in real time based on actual ambient and conductor temperatures, which reduces grid bottlenecks, lowers costs and improves the integration of renewable energies.

Smart reduction of grid bottlenecks with Dynamic Line Rating (DLR)

The current carrying capacity of many overhead lines is set conservatively. For reasons of operational safety, operating specifications are often based on blanket assumptions – for example for ambient temperature, no wind and high solar radiation. As a result, many lines are operated well below their actual possible capacity – even if the actual conditions would allow a significantly higher utilization.

With Dynamic Line Rating (DLR), these reserves can be increased in a targeted and controlled manner. The Smart Navigator 2.0 HV measures the actual temperature of the conductor rope and the ambient temperature – directly on site, without modeling, without estimation, without risk. This makes the dynamic current carrying capacity transparent in real time.

In strong winds, wind farms produce large amounts of electricity, while the same wind actively cools the transmission lines. The current-induced heating of the conductor cables is almost compensated for by the natural wind cooling. Without Dynamic Line Rating (DLR), however, this natural transmission capacity remains unrecognized with the result that wind energy has to be curtailed unnecessarily.

✅ Full utilization of existing grid capacities
✅ Noticeable reduction in redispatch costs
✅ Better integration of renewable energies to achieve climate goals
✅ No additional pylons, lines or approval procedures required
✅ Real-time data for grid management, operation and forecasting models
✅ Quick to retrofit, maintenance-free and cost-efficient

The infrastructure is already in place. With DLR, it can be used intelligently.
